Professor Shelda Debowski commenced as Director, Organisational and Staff Development at the University of Western Australia in 2003. Her portfolio includes responsibility for organizational analysis and development, leadership and researcher capacity building and professional development of all university staff. Shelda also directed the development of teaching and learning services for the University from 2003 – 2005. She sits on the UWA Advisory Boards for the University Club and University Extension. As President of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) since 2005, she also represents Australia on the Council of the International Consortium of Educational Developers (ICED). She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management and the Association of Tertiary Education Managers.

Shelda previously taught management in the Murdoch University Business School and Library and Information Science at Edith Cowan University. She has filled many academic leadership roles relating to both research and teaching at school, faculty and university levels and was a recipient of an excellence in teaching award from Edith Cowan University.

Her qualifications include a PhD, M.Ed and B.A. from the University of Western Australia, a Diploma of Teaching and Bachelor of Education from the Western Australian College of Advanced Education and a Diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Her recent publications include Knowledge Management (Wiley Press, 2006) and a range of book chapters and articles relating to higher education development. She has been particularly active in fostering research capacity building within UWA and across the Group of Eight universities. She also works as a research consultant in the areas of leadership, educational transformation and organizational development to industry and the educational sector.

Role

  • Responsible for the overall direction of the Organisational and Staff Development Services.
  • Consultant to senior staff of the University on strategic issues relating to the development of academic, professional, research and general staff.
  • Responsible for the provision of organisational and leadership development for academics, general staff and Heads of Academic Units.
  • Identifies issues relating to organisational and staff development and liaises with relevant groups within the University to address these concerns.
  • Provides support for the development of effective performance management processes within the University setting.
  • Responsible for the provision of organisational development, staff development and teaching and learning consultancy services to schools, faculties and teams within the University.
  • Coordinates strategic research projects relating to organisational, staff development and teaching / learning issues.
  • Represents organisational and staff development issues on the University Teaching and Learning Committee.
  • Executive Officer for the Staff Development Working Group.
  • Coordinates the AUTC Australian Awards for University Teaching.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Organisational and Staff Development Service.
  • Develops linkages with other universities and industry in relation to organisational and staff development strategies.
  • Promotes the University's organisational and staff development initiatives within the wider university sector.
