For further information, please contact Vivienne Blake on 6488 2136 or by email vivienne.blake@uwa.edu.au OverviewThis leadership programme is for ITS staff and selected IT Managers from other areas who wish to enhance their leadership skills. UWA and ITS recognise the importance of providing development opportunities to its leaders, which will equip them to face the many challenges of leadership in our dynamic environment. This new programme, funded by ITS, will support the development of enhanced leadership capacity, enabling participants to have a significant impact on their work area. It will encourage the development of new insights, knowledge and skills as well as the opportunity to expand networks. AimsThis programme aims to - Enhance leadership skills and understanding
- Encourage cross-institutional sharing
- Focus on human and resource leadership and management issues in qn IT context
- Extend personal networks
- Provide support for leaders working in a complex environment
PrinciplesMix of ITS Managers/staff and other interested IT ManagersThis programme supports the ‘one staff one university’ principle. The majority of places will be provided to ITS leaders/managers. Some further places will be open to ITS staff who aspire to leadership positions in the future and wish to self-nominate. There will also be places for IT managers who are located in other areas of the University who will also self-nominate. The opportunity to share information, skills and experiences across a diverse group is intended to help improve communication and share best practice. Networking will be a major focus, and we hope that participants will build strong working relationships which will strengthen their leadership practice for years to come. Mix of gendersThe programme is open to both men and women. Selection by invitational and self-nomination processesParticipants on the programme will be chosen by a mix of invitational and self-nomination processes. We use this approach to promote diversity within the programme cohort and to ensure that a wide range of views and perspectives will contribute to a rich and varied learning environment. - Invitational:
Those participants invited to attend will be chosen with a view to enhancing the leadership capability across key staff within ITS. - Self-nominating:
In addition to those invited to participate, several places have been made available for ITS staff who aspire to leadership roles and IT staff in other parts of the University, to self-nominate, so that individuals can use this opportunity to further develop their leadership potential. If you are self-nominating, you will need to complete the application form (see bottom of this page).
Programme elementsThe programme will contain the following elements: - 360-degree feedback to identify areas of strength and developmental needs
- Foundation 1-day workshop
- DiSC profiling tool to understand your behavioural preferences as leaders and how these preferences impact on others
- Individual leadership plans for self-directed learning
- Four half-day workshops on topics relevant to the needs identified for the cohort
- Opportunities for internal networking
360-degree feedback processThe Quality Leadership Profile (QLP) is a 360-degree feedback process which summarises self, peer, staff and supervisor perceptions of your leadership and management behaviour in your current role. The QLP survey assesses the 31 key competencies for leadership behaviour for those working in an Australian university context. The results of the survey provide valuable information which will help you devise a development plan specific to your needs and context. The 360-degree feedback process will commence in February and be completed before the Foundation Workshop in April. Foundation WorkshopThe Foundation workshop will be held on Wednesday 29 April 2009 at Tawarri Reception Centre Dalkeith. It will include theory and practical exercises, and provide a foundation for the activities/learning for the remainder of the programme. It is also an important opportunity to build networks and a strong group cohort. DiSC Profiling toolThis self-assessment process will help you identify the preferences that you have for leadership, communication and teamwork. This understanding will strengthen your ability to act flexibly as a leader in varying contexts. WorkshopsAs a result of the 360-degree feedback, the DiSC analysis and other needs analyses undertaken at the Foundation Workshop, we will identify up to 4 half day workshops addressing development needs within the group. These will be scheduled, in consultation with you, between May and November 2009. Internal Leadership NetworkYou will be given the option to develop internal networking meetings on a leadership topic of your choice, with each session followed by socialising (e.g. Friday afternoon presentations and then drinks). Previous groups who have done this have found it works to increase the opportunity to meet informally with other IT leaders, to share information, discuss issues and build working relationships in a relaxed environment.
Time commitmentThe time commitment will be to - 1 hour briefing session on 360-degree feedback February 17 2009
- 1.5 hour individual 360-degree feedback debriefing meeting with Vivienne in April
- 1 day Foundation workshop 29 April 2009
- 4 half day workshops scheduled from May – November at times determined by the participants
Start date and durationThe programme will begin in mid February 2009 and conclude in November 2009. Application process |
