Career Researchers: Supporting their developmental needs
A Review of the Raising Researchers Initiative Recommendations for Continuing Support and DevelopmentIn 2000, the University of Western Australia conducted a review of research only staff, leading to the Lake Report (2000). The review recommended that the University provide a researcher development programme as a key priority. The University provided funding for a part-time developer to provide support of this nature. In this first pilot of the programme, the developmental focus was targeted toward career planning, grant writing, networking and work management skills. In 2002 and 2003, two cohorts of researchers participated in the Raising Researchers programme. This initiative provided a comprehensive programme for 25 – 30 participants per annum. Additional workshops and activities were also offered to all researchers in the University. In 2004, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Alan Robson, requested that a review of the programme be undertaken, and that feedback from a wide range of stakeholders be obtained. The review therefore comprised interviews with previous participants, heads of school and mentors who supported the programme, and an analysis of the initial programme evaluations. |
