Section 1: Introduction

Who the Guide is for

This guide is written for any member of professional staff who is currently employed by the University of Western Australia.

It is designed to assist you if you are interested in applying for a job within the University, and covers issues such as:

  • deciding what type of job you want to apply for
  • putting together a good written application
  • how to address selection criteria, and
  • how to do well at an interview.

The guide is divided into separate, self-contained sections. You can either focus on a particular section that interests you, or work through the whole thing. The table of contents gives details of each section.

Why it Has Been Produced

The selection process at UWA has changed over time and has recently been streamlined to make it easier for job applicants. This guide will help you to understand what is required of job applicants and what University selection panels are looking for, and assist you in presenting yourself both on paper and at interview in a positive and professional manner.

Selection Process for Professional Staff at UWA

The University has a set of guidelines for the advertising of professional staff vacancies and for the recruitment and selection of applicants. A brief outline of the selection process is given below.

  • A selection panel is appointed, usually consisting of three people (a mixture of male and female):
    • the supervisor or head of section
    • one person who knows the job well or occupies a similar position
    • another person, often from outside the work area.
  • The position description and selection criteria are reviewed, and updated if necessary.
  • The position is advertised:
    • electronically via the Jobs@UWA web site
    • in the 'West Australian' newspaper, or other external sources, if applicable.
  • Written applications are received by Human Resources by a specified closing date.
  • Acknowledgements are sent to all applicants by Human Resources.
  • The selection panel studies all the applications and:
    • shortlists applicants who best meet the requirements of the position
    • interviews shortlisted applicants
    • administers additional 'work tests' if applicable, e.g. word processing
    • contacts referees.
  • The selection panel makes its decision, prepares a report of recommendation, and contacts the preferred applicant to advise of the outcome of the selection process.
  • Unsuccessful interviewees are advised and often given feedback.
  • The successful applicant is appointed to the job.
