Mentoring at UWA

Organisational and Staff Development Services logo

The University would like to extend an open invitation to staff interested in becoming mentors for other UWA staff members. Mentoring is an important and increasingly recognised staff development tool. There are a range of benefits for the mentor, the mentee and the University that result from mentoring partnerships and these are well documented.

In addition to a growing number of informal mentoring arrangements, the University currently offers opportunities for mentoring through a number of staff development programmes. The most extensive of these is the Leadership Development for Women (LDW) programme, which has been in place since 1994.

You may have a wide variety of skills, attitudes and experiences that would be of interest to a potential mentee in one or more of these programmes. Willingness to participate in a brief training session is also important. Benefits of being a mentor may include:

  • chance to review your own career goals and progress

  • increased self-confidence

  • new enthusiasm and perspective

  • increased understanding of other staff, and better networks

  • opportunity to share knowledge and make a positive contribution

  • satisfaction of seeing someone develop.

Once you have volunteered as a mentor, being selected and matched with a mentee depends to a large extent on when mentors are required for a particular programme, and on the skills and experience being sought by mentees.

Please consider the contribution you could make through mentoring. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please complete and submit the on-line form below. For additional information, please email Claire Webb.
