Freedom of Information (FOI) Awareness

Intended Audience:

Open to all UWA staff who would wish to attain a better understanding of the FOI Act, 1992 and how it affects The University of Western Australia (UWA) and its employees.

Workshop Description:

  • Understanding the Object and Intent of the FOI Act
  • Role of the Information Commissioner
  • How an Application is Made
  • UWA and the FOI Process
  • Public Interest Factors
  • Importance of Good Record Keeping
  • Applications for Amendment of Personal Information

Intended Outcomes:

The FOI Act affects all government employees including UWA staff and a better understanding of this legislation will assist you in dealing with a FOI application request and the manner in which information is recorded. By the end of the session you will:
  • be aware that applicants have a legal right to apply for access to documents held by UWA and our obligations as staff members.
  • have an understanding of the FOI Act.
  • be familiar with the process when an application is received by UWA.
  • recognise that we don’t always release information contained in records/documents.
  • be aware that everything you write down can be subject to a FOI application.

Key Activities:

The workshop will be interactive and includes a power point presentation and group discussion.

Cost:

UWA staff members and UWA affiliates will receive priority in gaining access to this session. Participant enrolment in this workshop will be confirmed following the closing date for applications. Please note a cancellation fee may apply for non-attendees. We also welcome enrolment by non-UWA participants, subject to availability. The commercial fee for non-UWA attendees is calculated at $100 per hour of attendance. Staff working in other universities will receive a 20% discount on the commercial fee.
