Ally Training

Intended Audience:

Any staff member or student who wishes to better understand the issues and needs of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex (GLBTI) staff and students, and is willing to consider becoming an Ally. The Ally website provides details about the Ally Network and the role of ‘Allies’, see www.ally.uwa.edu.au/.

Workshop Description:

Logo for the Ally Network for staff and students at UWAThe workshop aims to raise participants awareness of the life experience, issues and needs of GLBTI staff and students with a particular focus on campus and work/study experiences. Participants who complete training may elect to become part of the Ally Network.

Intended Outcomes:

By participating in this workshop you will:
  • Develop a better understanding of GLBTI people, issues and culture.
  • Reflect upon your own behaviour, sensitivities and understanding in relation to GLBTI persons.
  • Explore the process of becoming an Ally.
  • Become familiar with the practical issues concerning the Ally Network and how it will works and the role of an Ally.

  • Role plays
  • Panel of members from the GLBTI community

4 hours

  • Workshop 1: Monday 30 March 2009: 9:30am - 1:00pm
  • Workshop 2: Monday 17 August 2009: 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Cost:

UWA staff members and UWA affiliates will receive priority in gaining access to this session. Participant enrolment in this workshop will be confirmed following the closing date for applications. Please note a cancellation fee may apply for non-attendees. We also welcome enrolment by non-UWA participants, subject to availability. The commercial fee for non-UWA attendees is calculated at $100 per hour of attendance. Staff working in other universities will receive a 20% discount on the commercial fee.
