Introduction to Management

Intended Audience:

  • Academic, technical and administrative staff who are new to management or supervision.
  • Staff who manage small or large teams.
  • Experienced managers and supervisors with little or no formal training, and those with formal training who would like to update and enhance their skills.
  • Non-supervisory staff interested in the programme as a career development opportunity.

Workshop Description:

This highly rated workshop is intended to help you develop in the role of team leader/manager. The course will examine the role and responsibilities of first line managers/team leaders; assist you to more effectivel organise yourself and others; help you to develop effective communication skills; and explore the factors necessary for the provision of effective performance feedback and problem solving.

To achieve the intended learning outcomes, it is important that you attend all sessions. Please do not apply for this workshop unless you can attend all sessions.

Intended Outcomes:

Participants will enhance the competencie@s required to manage and supervise others by:
  • Clarifying their role and responsibilities of a first line manager and exploring different leadership styles;
  • Developing or reinforcing the skills needed to organise yourself and others;
  • Developing or reinforcing their skills needed to communicate effectively;
  • Developing or reinforcing their ability to provide meaningful performance feedback and resolve performance issues;
A follow-up session is held to enable participants to review their progress.

Four 4 hour sessions, plus a 2 hour follow-up session (18 hours total)

Cost:

UWA staff members and UWA affiliates will receive priority in gaining access to this session. Participant enrolment in this workshop will be confirmed following the closing date for applications. Please note a cancellation fee may apply for non-attendees. We also welcome enrolment by non-UWA participants, subject to availability. The commercial fee for non-UWA attendees is calculated at $100 per hour of attendance. Staff working in other universities will receive a 20% discount on the commercial fee.
