How to Give Interesting Conference Presentations

Intended Audience:

General and academic staff who deliver or wish to deliver interesting and professional conference papers.

Workshop Description:

This workshop is intended to help you make high quality and high impact conference presentations. It will focus on how to present your research in an interesting way which will capture and hold the audiences' attention. The workshop is short and focused. It will not cover how to deal with the anxiety which some people experience when making conference presentations. If you wish to explore how to deal with presentation 'nerves', please see the workshop "Making Presentations with Confidence and Impact", which will be offered in the OSDS second semester programmes. The workshop content includes:
  • Starting strongly and capturing the audience's attention
  • Presenting with impact
  • Selecting the best ways to get your point across
  • Varying the presentation style for maximum interest
  • Avoiding reading the written paper word for word
  • Maintaining the audience's interest
  • Reading the audience correctly
  • Interacting successfully with the audience
  • Choosing the right humour
  • Maintaining the energy in yourself and the audience
  • Making sure your key points are well remembered
  • Using powerpoint in an interesting and effective way
  • Standing out from all the other conference papers
  • Being remembered for the right reasons!

Intended Outcomes:

  • Preparing an effective conference paper
  • Selecting from a variety of ways to present at a conference
  • Using powerpoints well
  • Delivering a conference paper in an interesting way
  • Getting your point across in a short time
  • Looking forward to presenting conference papers!

Key Activities:

Interactive, practical and skills-based:
  • Informed and interesting demonstrations and presentations
  • Practical applications to your conference paper
  • Group discussions and exercises
  • Powerpoint demonstrations and developments
  • Personal coaching
  • Informative handouts

Participants will have the opportunity to address aspects of conference presentations of particular interest and concern to them and to receive personal feedback from a skilled conference speaker. Participants are requested to bring along notes for a conference paper they will be presenting, have presented or would like to present.

Cost:

UWA staff members and UWA affiliates will receive priority in gaining access to this session. Participant enrolment in this workshop will be confirmed following the closing date for applications. Please note a cancellation fee may apply for non-attendees. We also welcome enrolment by non-UWA participants, subject to availability. The commercial fee for non-UWA attendees is calculated at $100 per hour of attendance. Staff working in other universities will receive a 20% discount on the commercial fee.
