Courageous Conversations about Race

Intended Audience:

This workshop is intended for any staff member whose work involves contact with students or staff members from different cultural backgrounds. Please note this workshop was advertised as "Intercultural Communication".

Workshop Description:

Working with staff and students from different cultures is both rewarding and challenging. This workshop provides an opportunity to increase your skill in understanding working with and the provision of services to people from a range of cultural backgrounds. It will examine the concept of culture, coming to grips with a new culture, the impact of body language, and areas of misconception and why they might occur. It will explore the opportunities to reflect upon and practice strategies for communicating accross cultures.

Intended Outcomes:

At the conclusion of the programme, participants will:
  • Communicate with increased sensitivity with people from different cultures
  • Use effective cross-cultural communication techniques in the provision of services to students
  • Recognise cultural differences in non-verbal language
  • Provide better service as well as improve their job satisfaction

3.5 hours

  • Workshop 1: Tuesday 24 March 2009: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
  • Workshop 2: Thursday 24 September 2009: 1:00pm - 5:00pm
  • Workshop 3: Tuesday 8 December 2009: 1:00pm - 4:30pm
  • Workshop 4: Monday 7 December 2009: 1:00pm - 4:30pm

Cost:

UWA staff members and UWA affiliates will receive priority in gaining access to this session. Participant enrolment in this workshop will be confirmed following the closing date for applications. Please note a cancellation fee may apply for non-attendees. We also welcome enrolment by non-UWA participants, subject to availability. The commercial fee for non-UWA attendees is calculated at $100 per hour of attendance. Staff working in other universities will receive a 20% discount on the commercial fee.
