Staff Development Programme

The University of Western Australia is focused on achieving international excellence – in all aspects of its activities. Each of us plays a part in supporting this agenda by optimising our talents and capabilities, leading effectively and contributing to the University’s outcomes through our professional endeavours.

Organisational and Staff Development Services, along with many other university agencies, offers many different avenues for staff to maintain and further develop their skills and knowledge. This programme guide is your annual listing of workshops, programmes, networks and services designed to assist you. The University strongly encourages all staff to use these services and to maintain their currency.

The programme includes a number of new and highly focused workshops. In addition to the ongoing services that are featured, you will also find some exciting new opportunities. These include:.

• Leadership Pathways: a new leadership programme for mid-level managers
• Settling In: a new researcher orientation and induction programme for all academics and researchers associated with the university. This includes Connect: New Research/Academic Staff network which will meet five times next year.
• Future Research Leaders Programme: an exciting Group of Eight universities initiative which allows researchers to develop their research management skills and capabilities.

OSDS supports the development of all UWA staff in the areas of leadership, team, career, research and professional capabilities through the provision of workshops and programmes. Workshops are provided as single activity events which encourage development related to a specific skill or capability. All staff have access to these workshops, and are guided to them through the Professional Development Review process and through direct marketing or online guidance.

They operate through self-selection and / or supervisor guidance. Programmes are cohort-based sustained developmental experiences which encourage the building of a peer network and in-depth engagement with leadership and professional issues. Attendance at programmes is by nomination and / or selection, and requires attendance on a number of occasions, ranging from one to two semesters. These programmes incorporate mentorship support and other forms of individual guidance.

The UWA Professional and Leadership Development Framework guides the workshops and programmes to be offered and links closely to the Professional Development Review (PDR) system. Analyses of major sources have assisted in identifying eight capabilities as UWA priorities.
