Abstract

Effective lecturing project - A useful educational development resource?

Bob Matthew, University of Glasgow, Scotland
Colin Mason, University of St Andrews, Scotland
Kate Morss, Queen Margaret University College, Scotland

The Scottish Higher Education Funding Council in 1999 launched a funded programme on the development of staff development materials relating to use of communication and information technologies (C&IT) by academic staff. The authors were successful in obtaining funds to develop materials that related to how C&IT could be used to enhance the lecturing process. The rationale behind this bid will be explained in the session. The materials developed include paper based review articles summarising research evidence on the effectiveness of lecturing and what makes a good lecture.

A series of 10 case studies were developed as video/DVD resources which show members of staff using a variety of C&IT approaches to enhance their teaching. These cases range from staff who simply use the overhead projector right through to those who deliver courses entirely on-line, and encompass a range of different disciplines, at different levels and varying class sizes. Each of the case studies features the member of staff talking about their teaching philosophy, extracts from a lecturing session with real students and interviews with students about that particular session as well as the member of staff's general approach to teaching.

In the workshop participants will have an opportunity to: view a number of the case studies; examine the paper-based materials and possible workshop formats; reflect on how they might use the materials in their own training or teaching; and finally; question the presenters about how they have used the materials in their own institutions.

Key words:
Lecturing; Communication and information technologies; Educational development

Objectives, outcomes and activities:

  • To review the materials developed by the Effective Lecturing Project (paper based and video case studies);
  • To reflect on how these materials can be used in day to day educational development activities; and
  • To discuss how these materials have been used elsewhere.

Bob Matthew is the Director of the Teaching and Learning Service at the University of Glasgow. He taught Civil Engineering in a number of universities for 18 years before moving into Educational Development some four years ago. He is a keen hill walker and cyclist.

Colin Mason is the Director of Learning and Teaching Development at the University of St Andrews. Previously he taught in a department of Biomedical Sciences before, like Bob, moving into Educational and Staff Development. He is keen jogger and surfer in his spare time.

Kate Morss is the Director of the Centre for Learning and Teaching at Queen Margaret University College in Edinburgh. Kate taught in the Biological Sciences and has been in Educational Development for six years. She is interested in the arts, particularly music and theatre, but often can be seen striding over the local hills with her dog.

Bob and Colin first met when they both worked at Bradford University, UK, and shared an interest in developing their teaching. They have continued to work together on a variety of projects after moving into Educational Development in Scottish Universities, where of course they met Kate with whom they have worked on a number of projects.
